FAQs

What age does my fencer need to be?

Fencing is undoubtedly a lifelong sport and nationwide, athletes compete into their 90’s; however, it’s also more fun when your fencer can follow along. We suggest our students be at least 6-7 years old to be able to hold their attention through 60 minutes of instruction and physical work.

If you feel that your younger fencer may be able to keep up in a class or would like to discuss private lessons as an alternative, please contact us.

What weapon do you teach?

We are currently the only saber-specific club in the state and host a small, guest foil program once a week.

Do I have to sign up for a whole month?

We understand the hesitation of a month-long commitment (especially with fickle kids and changing interests). We offer a variety of starter options, including packages, lessons, and trial classes. Click here for more information and scheduling.

What gear will I need?

A full set of gear includes: a weapon-specific mask, white jacket, glove, 2 complete sabers, 2 extra blades, 2 body cords, 2 mask cords, a weapon-specific lame, knickers, underarm or chest protector, and knee high white socks. We offer equipment rental for $30 per month.

We carry a limited stock of gear for purchase. Please see one of our staff for more information and sizing help.

What COVID precautions are being taken?

If there was ever a sport designed to comply with COVID restrictions, fencing is definitely up there. Our athletes know the importance of social distancing because if they don’t keep their distance, they’ll likely surrender an easy point to their opponent!

As with most other business, we are closely watching local and national ordinances around protecting our fencing family. Because it's on everyone's mind, we are limiting class size to help protect against COVID and gear is sanitized after use in classes. We also have had a lot of fencers get their own gear just as a personal preference, at least starting with a mask and saber, to help limit shared surface touching. We've also asked the older and experienced students to have parents drop them off and pick them up curbside, but of course, we understand that younger fencers may not feel as comfortable with this at first. Lastly, we check in on temperatures and/or any potential symptoms with our coaches and leaders every day before practice.
